“Selby, I’m not sure if he’s related to your Clement, but a Josué (Joseph) Noel was in the Newfoundland Regiment in 1812 when he sold hisJerseyproperty to my ancestor Henry Renouf. The contract gives the following information: Josué Noel, son of Philippe Noel, tailor, and Rachel Le Cornu native of St Mary but currently (1812) in the Newfoundland Regiment (the contract was signed in Quebec where it can still be found today at the archives, and subsequently entered in the Jersey land register) Josué’s “Procureur” was Hugh Godfray. A note at the end says that Josué signs his name as “Joseph”.

Jersey Inhabitants by Parish in 1788
Consequent to an Act of the States of Jersey in April 1788, to provide information to the English Parliament touching on affairs of the Jersey wool knitting industry, inhabitants’ names and numbers were collected ( a form of Census) and compiled by the Parish Vingteniers. Unfortunately much of this is lost, however, the Island total for that year (1788) survives, as does the list of names and ages for the one parish of St. Lawrence. Mrs. Marie Louise Backhurst transcribed these from the original, held at the Society Jersiaise Library and it was printed in early 1980/1 editions of the CIFHS Journal.
St. Helier 4064 inhabitants St. Saviour 1335 St. Clement 635 Grouville 1262 St. Martin 1393 (Most of the Noels are here) Trinity 2058 St. John 1419 St. Peter c.1611 St. Ouen 2025 St. Mary 869 St. Brelade 1756 St. Lawrence 1598
Total inhabitants of Jersey, 9th April 1788. c. 20,025.
If we prorate the Noels (352) by Population (52,445) in 1881 then there would be only be about 152 Noels in Jersey in 1788. This is probably about the time that Josue would have departed.
